Rare Antique Berber Necklace Carved Bovine Bone Red Beads Tribal Millefiori
This exceptional early-mid 20th century tribal necklace is a rare and culturally significant fusion of trade materials spanning the Venetian, Himalayan, Afghan, and North African bead routes of the early 1900s. It is a substantial collector-grade statement piece measuring approximately 42cm attached (84cm total end-to-end), with dramatic movement and museum-level presence.
At the upper section are two authentic Venetian millefiori trade beads, identifiable by their early cane-slice floral patterns, irregular hand-cut edges, and natural age wear. These beads were produced in Italy in the late 1800s-1930s and exported throughout Africa and the Silk Road regions for use in high-status adornments.
The necklace features an impressive combination of hand-carved bovine bone, including pierced geometric bone tubes and carved bone panels—each crafted with distinct tribal workmanship typical of North African and Himalayan artisans between the 1920s-1950s. These bone elements lead into an elaborate multi-strand tassel grouping composed of hundreds of early glass micro seed beads in deep red tones.
Accenting the bone and seed beads are a series of honey-amber coloured Indo-Tibetan glass beads, displaying the classic internal swirl and warm translucency characteristic of early Himalayan and Central Asian glass production. Interspersed silver-tone tribal beads bring depth and authenticity, bearing natural patina consistent with age and wear.
This mixed-material construction—combining Venetian millefiori, carved bone, Himalayan-style glass, tribal silver, and multi-strand seed bead tassels—is rarely seen in a single piece. It reflects the dynamic movement of beads, artisans, and cultural exchange along major 20th century trade routes.
A later clasp replacement has been added for secure modern wear while preserving the integrity of the original construction.
