Our Sourcing & Assessment Process
At Caviera83, our passion lies in sourcing, researching, and preserving unique pieces of jewellery history. We specialise in carefully selected vintage, antique, and estate items, and we treat every piece with the care and attention it deserves.
This page explains how we research and describe what we sell, so you know exactly what to expect before you buy.
A Note on Terms
- Antique — pieces that are generally 100 years old or older.
- Vintage — pieces typically between 20 and 100 years old.
- Estate — previously owned pieces of any age, sometimes only lightly worn.
How We Assess Our Pieces
We are not certified gemologists or professional authenticators. What we offer is careful, honest research and clear disclosure wherever something cannot be confirmed. Our assessment of each piece involves physical inspection, research, examination of hallmarks and maker’s marks, assessment of construction methods and age-related characteristics, and the use of reference materials and modern research tools. Where appropriate, we may also use non-destructive testing methods available to us. Every item goes through this process before it is listed.
Physical Inspection
Each piece is examined by hand, with attention given to construction methods, hallmarks and maker’s marks, clasps and fittings, settings, materials, and the age-related characteristics consistent with vintage and pre-owned jewellery. Any wear, repairs, or condition issues are photographed and described within the listing.
Historical Research
We draw on collector references, hallmark and maker guides, auction and archive records, manufacturer information, and modern research tools to help identify a piece’s era, origin, materials, and design significance. Where a piece’s provenance is known, we share it; where it is not, we will not invent it.
Materials, Metals & Stones
We report hallmarks and marks as we find them. Where appropriate, we may use non-destructive testing methods available to us, but we do not carry out certified laboratory analysis. Unless a piece is independently hallmarked or certified, we describe metals and gemstones based on inspection, research, and any non-destructive testing we have been able to carry out — and we say so clearly in the listing. Where a material cannot be confirmed, we describe it that way rather than presenting it as fact.
Honest Representation
Descriptions are prepared in good faith based on our research, observations, and experience handling vintage jewellery and collectables. Where uncertainty exists, we disclose it clearly within the listing rather than presenting assumptions as confirmed facts.
Specialist Consultation
Where a piece calls for knowledge or verification beyond our own — particularly if we are uncertain about its authenticity, materials, or attribution — we may seek additional information from specialist resources or professionals before listing it.
Questions Before You Buy
We would always rather answer a question than leave you guessing. If you would like further detail, additional photographs, or measurements on any item, please get in touch before purchasing — we are happy to help.
Our Commitment
Our goal is simple: to provide collectors with carefully researched, honestly represented vintage and estate pieces, while maintaining transparency, integrity, and respect for the history behind every item we offer.
